一片片小小的瓷磚，在牆上開了花
這個頻繁下雨的副熱帶島國，早在約莫一世紀前，人們便為房子覆上瓷磚外衣。
時間流過磚與磚，在縫隙停留，成為時代。
當今回顧，先民的工法與美感，雋永依舊。
老瓷磚體現出各個時代臺灣人的生活美感，它們靜靜地陪著我們走過歲月，卻不曾被好好的重視與記錄。而今，隨著老房子逐漸凋零、消失，老瓷磚也將走入歷史，珍貴的瓷磚圖樣若是無人紀錄與保存，可能永遠消失在人們的記憶中。過去6年，我們行走過臺灣本島與金門超過50個鄉鎮市區，穿梭無數街道與巷弄，找尋並記錄臺灣各地老民宅留存的瓷磚。 這是一本完整介紹臺灣瓷磚歷史、一覽瓷磚圖樣之美的書籍，我們希望，過去珍貴的瓷磚紋樣可以用不同的形式保留下來，成為臺灣人共有的文化資產。
❖ 爿爿花，「爿」音「半」，是「牆」的古字，瓷磚就像是一片片開在牆上的花。而「爿」與「片」水平對稱如瓷磚組合排列，此外，爿為家的意涵也呼應我們探尋、發現一家家所擁有的獨特瓷磚拼花。❖
Small Tiles Blooming on the Walls
In this frequently rainy subtropical island nation, people began adorning their houses with tiled exteriors nearly a century ago. Time flows through the tiles, pausing in the gaps, becoming part of the era. Reflecting on it today, the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of our ancestors remain timelessly elegant.
Old tiles embody the aesthetic of various eras of Taiwanese life. They have silently accompanied us through the years, yet have seldom been properly valued and documented. Now, as old houses gradually decay and disappear, the old tiles are also fading into history. Without proper documentation and preservation, these precious tile patterns may vanish forever from our collective memory.
Over the past six years, we have traversed more than 50 towns and districts across Taiwan and Kinmen. We have wandered through countless streets and alleys, seeking out and recording the old tiles found in historic homes throughout Taiwan. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the history of Taiwanese tiles and an overview of their beautiful patterns. We hope that these precious patterns from the past can be preserved in different forms, becoming a shared cultural asset for the people of Taiwan.
❖ Panpanhua
The character “爿” (pronounced “pan”) is an ancient form of the word “wall.” Tiles resemble flowers blooming on walls. The character “爿” is symmetrically aligned with the character “片,” much like how tiles are arranged together. Additionally, “爿” carries the meaning of “home,” which echoes our quest to discover and document the unique tile patterns that adorn each household. ❖

時間流轉，新大樓逐漸取代老公寓，這些熟悉的風景隨著城市的代謝慢慢褪色，有一天終會走入歷史。
Do these scenes feel familiar to you? “Tiles” have shaped the everyday landscape of Taiwan, creating a unique mosaic of our homes. As time passes, new buildings gradually replace old apartments, and these familiar scenes fade with the city’s transformation. One day, they will inevitably become a part of history.

Tile Patterns Represent a System of Taiwanese Life Aesthetics
瓷磚在臺灣的歷史可以追溯至清代，從過去裝飾在大宅院、洋樓的馬約利卡瓷磚，到近代常見於民宅內外牆的馬賽克磚、印花磚。
瓷磚體現出各個時代臺灣人的生活美感與歷史發展，我們可以在瓷磚的紋樣、印花上，看到許多代表不同意義的紋樣，有的帶有傳統的吉祥涵義、有的又非常現代前衛。
The history of tiles in Taiwan can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty. From the past, where Majolica tiles decorated grand estates and Western-style buildings, to the present where mosaic tiles and printed tiles are commonly seen on the interior and exterior walls of residences.
Tiles reflect the aesthetic sensibilities and historical developments of different eras in Taiwan. In the patterns and prints of tiles, we can observe many designs that represent various meanings—some embodying traditional auspicious symbols, while others are very modern and avant-garde.
老瓷磚不再生產，珍貴圖樣卻未被保存！
Old Tiles Are No Longer Produced, Yet Their Precious Patterns Have Not Been Preserved!
隨著技術革新與建築風格轉變，這些多變有趣的老瓷磚退下舞台，被現代的石英磚、石板磚所取代。但我們發現，過去已經停產的老瓷磚，圖樣卻沒有被完整的保存下來，臺灣將失去寶貴的圖樣資產，未來如果要復刻老瓷磚或其他形式的利用都將面臨困難。
With the advancement of technology and changes in architectural styles, these diverse and intriguing old tiles have been replaced by modern quartz tiles and slate tiles. However, we have realized that the patterns of these discontinued old tiles have not been fully preserved. Taiwan is on the brink of losing these valuable design assets, which will pose significant challenges for future efforts to replicate or repurpose them in any form.
看似平凡的背後，是生活與記憶的結晶

觀察身邊的生活環境，過去是否從未好好的認識瓷磚這個看似很平凡的東西，其精緻的釉料表面、手繪印刷的圖樣、拼貼組合的方式等等，都充滿變化與趣味。時間與生活的痕跡更增添了一層屬於臺灣的文化特色。
Have you ever truly appreciated tiles, which may seem quite ordinary at first glance? Their exquisite glazed surfaces, hand-painted patterns, and various mosaic compositions are all full of variation and charm. The traces of time and daily life further enrich them with a unique cultural characteristic that belongs to Taiwan.

We have walked through more than 50 towns and districts across Taiwan and Kinmen, weaving through countless streets and alleys to seek out and document the tiles preserved on the exterior walls, interior walls, and floors of old residences. We hope that Taiwan will have a comprehensive book introducing the history of its tiles and showcasing the beauty of their patterns.

A Comprehensive Catalog of the Most Complete and Diverse Tile Patterns
爿爿花臺灣傳統瓷磚圖鑑，內容分為兩個部分，前半部將田野調查所蒐集到的照片做全面且系統性的整理，後半部是我們重新繪製的瓷磚圖樣。這不只是一本實用與美感兼具的工具書，更是一本台灣常民美學的珍貴記錄。
The content of “Panpanhua: A Catalog of Traditional Taiwanese Tiles” is divided into two parts. The first half provides a comprehensive and systematic compilation of photographs collected from our field research. The second half features our meticulously redrawn tile patterns. This book is not only a practical tool that combines functionality with aesthetics but also a precious record of Taiwan’s common folk aesthetics.
